Always Be Growing

I have started to read the book The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery by Eric Foner.  In the preface the author reminds us that the hallmark of Lincoln's greatness was his capacity for growth.  He was a man who never seems to stop growing.  He grew into greatness.

The author goes onto say that not every individual possesses the capacity for growth.  In fact, there are some who seem to shrink, rather than grow, when faced with a crisis.  The reason Lincoln was able to grow was not only because he was true to an inner compass but also because he was willing to listen to critism and seek out new ideas.

It is my hope that the Esperanza educators will follow Lincoln's example and do what is necessary to develop our capacity to grow.  We can, therefore, be examples for our Esperanza scholars in this--one of the most important lessons we can teach them.

Learning About Leadership From George Washington

I have been reading the book Washington a Life by Ron Chernow. I have not only gained a greater respect and admiration for George Washington but I have also been learning more about leadership. In my reading this morning the following are a few things I want to remember:
  • Washington never insulated himself from contrary opinions. He felt this could enable him to correct his faults as well as weigh all sides of an issue before coming to a conclusion.
  • Washington felt that well-bred people made the best officers. He also pleaded with these officers to lead by example and share their men's hardships.
  • Washington felt that profane language would undermine discipline. (pgs. 292-3)

Being a Reader and Writer

When I left the Dual Immersion Academy charter school on May 14, 2010 I made a commitment to continue growing and learning to be prepared for the next chapter in my life. Because of that commitment I read 289 books since that day. I intend to continue reading this next year with a special focus on doing some narrow reading like reading all Ann Rinaldi's historical fiction books.

Yet, a quote by Arthur Helps, a writer (1813-1875)-- "Reading is sometimes an ingenious device for avoiding thought"--gave me some food for thought. Therefore, this next year I'm also going to focus on doing some writing:

  • Write in my reflective journal

  • Write a daily BLOG posting

  • Write poems based on the book Rose, Where Did You Get That Red? by Kenneth Koch

Being readers and writers is important for all Esperanza educators to do if we are going to set the example for our students.
